Seeking Out Music Programs
Piggybacking off of what was said last month, I do believe it is important to seek out other musicians to play with. Unfortunately, this can be a bit challenging as a guitarist or pianist. Many schools don’t offer many opportunities for these instruments or can be very limited. Therefore I would highly considered joining any music program that your school does have to offer. I, myself, joined band in 6th grade where I learned the fundamentals of music. It was not until high school that I actually picked up a guitar to learn how to play. Being a part of band though, where I played trumpet, helped me learn the guitar at a faster pace.
If you are in elementary and are getting ready to head into middle school next year, I would highly recommend you joining one of the music programs such as Band, Orchestra, or Choir. For most of you, it will give you the opportunity to learn a new instrument which will make you versatile. You will have many opportunities to perform and learn new music, and along the way, you may just make a few new friends. Also if you’re already in middle or high school, it may not be too late. Many schools do offer classes for beginners to start off. I would also look out for any clubs that your school may offer such as a Rock or Guitar Club. Also look into the church you attend and see if they have a youth group that you can join. If you are an adult talking lessons here at SAMA, look out for our Adult Jam Sessions that we have every few months.
