Music Theory 1

This group class blends music theory and ear training to help students grow as musicians. We’ll cover intervals such as the Major 3rd, Tritone, and chord qualities such as diminished and augmented chords. We’ll go over triads, scales, and pattern recognition. Through listening exercises, you’ll sharpen your ability to identify intervals, chords, and rhythms.

Do any of these terms sound like Greek to you? It won’t for long! With Music Theory 1, you’ll build a strong foundation in music theory while sharpening your ear training skills. Become a well-rounded musician in this supportive, engaging class led by SAMA instructor, Hannah Petersen.

FAQ

What prior knowledge do I need for this class?

No previous music theory knowledge is required, although it’s helpful to have experience with an instrument such as piano, guitar, voice, drums, or violin. For students not enrolled in lessons, San Antonio Music Academy also offers private lessons.

Is this class good for beginners?

Yes, this class is meant for beginners. The curriculum closely follows the College Board AP framework, which is designed for students starting their music theory journey.

How is ear training taught during the sessions?

The class is held in the San Antonio Music Academy piano lab, where each student has a keyboard. With the instructor’s guidance, students try ear training exercises directly on their keyboards. The instructor also quizzes students interactively to reinforce each concept.

What materials or instruments do I need?

You don’t need to bring an instrument, as the class takes place in the piano lab. It’s helpful to have manuscript paper, available at the front desk, and a notebook for your notes. If you prefer digital tools, you’re welcome to bring a tablet, and the instructor can recommend useful software.

How will this help with AP Music Theory?
