Frequently Asked Questions
What's different about San Antonio Music Academy?
San Antonio Music Academy has a rigorous selection process when choosing instructors to work for our academy. We want only the best on staff so that everyone involved has a positive experience with our academy. In addition to the qualifications of our instructors, we understand that student safety and respect is paramount. This is why each of our instructors takes a certified safety training program when hired in addition to the extensive background check we run. Instructors at San Antonio Music Academy understand the needs of their students and that each student has a different motivation for learning. Our passion is to take a student’s goals and make them a reality.
How long does it take to learn to play the drums?
This depends on a student’s goals. For example, if a student wants to learn to play a basic rock beat, he/she could do this in a month’s time with consistent practice. However, if they would like to learn to play a Neal Peart drum solo, several years of percussion foundation and technique must be learned before attempting something of this complexity. Some of our students ask for help with pieces they’re working on with the school band. Other want help learning to play rock songs. Be sure to inform your drum instructor of your personal musical goals.
What are your normal tuition rates?
If you continue to take drum lessons after your free lessons, you would pay just $150/month. For 30-minute private lessons meeting once a week, the tuition is $150/month. For 60-minute private lessons meeting once a week, the tuition is $300/month. There is a one-time membership fee of $30. We recommend beginning students to start with with 30-minute lessons.
Where is the music academy located?
We are located at the intersection of Braun and 1604 in the Braun Pointe Shopping Center. Other notable businesses within our center are Little Woodrow’s, Fast Eddie’s, and Starbucks. We are just behind Little Woodrow’s. Our address is 9910 W Loop 1604 North, Ste. 103, San Antonio, 78254.
Do you offer lessons for other instruments?
Yes, we offer private lessons for piano, guitar, bass, voice, and violin. Unfortunately, those other instruments are not eligible for this crazy awesome deal!
Do I need to have my own drumset?
All a student needs to start out learning drums is a pair of sticks. At the music academy, we have two drumsets in the percussion room – one for the student and the other for the instructor. The drum instructor will give weekly assignments which can be practiced with a pair of sticks and a makeshift (or real) drum pad. We have both drumsticks and drum pads available for purchase at the studio.
Do you offer music recitals?
Yes, we do! We have 2 formal recitals each year. (Take a look of some of our student performances on our Youtube channel. We’re pretty proud of them.) Recitals give students the opportunity to showcase the hard work they’ve put into learning their instrument. Sharing their work and talent with invited family and friends is a special moment for each student, which contributes to continued motivation to become an even better musician. In addition, we also have an ensemble program. Students enrolled in one of our ensemble classes are given the opportunity to perform in public venues, giving them real world performance experience. Thad Humphrey,
Drum Instructor
Thad was born in Austin but was raised in San Antonio. When he was growing up, his dad exposed him to a lot of classic rock and various other music genres, but Thad always found himself most fascinated by the drums. After years of taking lessons at SAMA and participating in the SAMA Band Ensembles, he found himself playing in a few cover bands that primarily focused on rock and similar styles. Thad enjoys listening to EDM, which typically lacks real drums, but he still likes to see how the songs could be translated into a real drum set. Recently, he has developed an interest in reggae and is currently exploring the grooves and styles of that genre.
During his free time, Thad loves to write and produce his own music, allowing him to express his personality through new styles, sounds, and lyrics. Additionally, he finds joy in playing video games, building Lego sets, and occasionally painting.
